(In my best Forrest Gump voice) I'm not a smart man.....when it comes to computers. The computer I have I upgraded the memory cards and it has 64 GB memory. I run 18 accounts on it without many issues. but when I have all my accounts going (23), sometimes a couple of them crash here and there. I know some people out there run 30+, 40+ even 54 accounts I've heard at one point. My wife and I are both retired and we will probably be doing more traveling now that she's not working. I am looking at getting a laptop to take this show on the road, but I am looking at top gaming laptops and I'm only seeing 16GB memory at best. Not sure a laptop can handle more than say 6 accounts at one time.

Anyone have a laptop they can successfully run numerous accounts on at one time they can recommend? I just don't know if 16GB can handle it. If you have a recommendation, please tell me along with how many accounts you run on it at the same time and if you have any issues, when do they start (more than 12, etc).

Will try to attack the specs of my cpu (desktop) that I'm using now.

Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

You can get away with many accounts on less RAM if you are willing to run without any graphics (stick figures option) and low FPS using frame limiter. It's all in the settings sometimes to achieve these things.
Would I need to run stick figures on ALL the accounts? I wouldn't mind running stick figures on all the other accounts that I am not watching, but have normal running on the toon I drive with. Not sure if that would make a difference.
Will have to google the Frames Per Second and see what that does. I thought that you would want FPS to high so there isn't lag. (like I said, I'm not a Geek Squad employee at Best Buy)

Hi Twisted -
There's an older thread around here on optimizing EQ. In there the author says to assign each client to a core, and that's worked fine as a rule of thumb for me. I'm using a 24 core laptop and there's no stick figures here. Can even use spell effects if I want.

I run 5fps or less on all of my non-driving toons. I run 60 fps on my SK.

I 6 box on only 16gb of ddr daily. Everybody restricted to 5fps. No issues at all.

I hate laptops with a passion.

#1 - They cost more than a desktop will
#2 - The 'gaming' laptops have CPU/GPU's that generate more heat than the cooling system can get rid of.
#3 - When under load they sound like jet engines spooling up for take off.

If you MUST go with a laptop make sure you have a good return policy.

The advice others have given in this thread are spot on.

Generally I plan:
- 2 GB of ram per instance of EQ ( ram is cheap and I like to have lots )
- 2x instances of EQ per CPU core ( can probably go 3x now with improved frame limiter and better cpu's )

Given you want to run 18 characters - I'd want ~ 32 GB of ram and something with ~ 8+ CPU cores.

Something like this should be enough to work out of the box:

$1400 - https://www.microcenter.com/product...laptop-computer-platinum-collection-luna-grey

Could shave some cash and maybe go with cheaper and add ram but might effect warranty.

$900 - https://www.microcenter.com/product...p-computer-platinum-collection-obsidian-black

$50 - https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-4800MHz-PC5-38400-Non-ECC-M425R2GA3BB0-CQK/dp/B0CP6DLJPC

You could replace both sticks of ram for $150

Not really. The assign a core to each instance works for me too as others have said. I have found that I can run moderate graphics settings with 1 gig of ram per core per instance. Also with a reduced clip plane to 50 on each instance.

Twisted.

You should be able to see how much hardware your EQ setup is using right now and then use that to spec your laptop.

Simply fire up all your EQ clients and then run 'task manager'

Look at the processes tab and you can see how much each EQ client is using.
Look at the performance tab and you can see your CPU, GPU and Memory load for the entire system.

Dont manually assign cores. EQ has windows manage it for the last 2 years, you might end up with worse performance.

This is a great idea but I feel the need to restate that the mq frame limiter should be set up properly first!

Also myself and grim are pretty heavy Lenovo fans. You want a solid chassis if you are travelling and do some homework on cooling and noise performance! Dewey was spot on when he was talking about jet engines.

I've had to use software to tune fans and max temp to get the noise/performance ratio I wanted (my CPU is basically designed to be temp limited rather than clock speed limited, ie, it will go to the temp you allow and give as much performance it can within that limit).

For the record, I can run 15 on this (and likely more), with one running unrestricted, 2 capped at 60fps, with the rest using .01 fps (all using MQ frame limiting). I haven't even adjusted the ini, I just rely on that limiting, which is likely trumping anything video settings in EQ... I'm sure I could push more I just don't raid and that's the most I ever need to run (2 groups farming and a few mules doing things etc).

(I added another 16gb of ram. I would highly consider a laptop expanding to 64gb if I was buying today, I bought this before I started boxing in eq)

I bought an overspecced laptop as I use for other things as well as EQ but have had 15 toons working fine with normal settings (using background MQ2 framelimiter only).

ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 NVIDIA RTX 4080, 32GB, 17.3" WQHD 240Hz, AMD Ryzen R9-7945HX Gaming Laptop

Support comment above, desktop is cheaper and much easier to spec up for EQ specific but I needed a laptop too as away a lot with business.

If you hunt around, you can find an older used or refurb Asus Rog Strix G16/G17 laptop for around $500-$800 range. I went this route to load up 1-2 teams on, and then the other teams I run on my main PC.

I run 24+ accts in Lenovo Thinkpads (Laptops) w/ docking stations T420-T430's (with all graphics and clip plane dialed down). Can usually find them for $50-80 bucks from refurbished sites/stores and can upgrade them to max specs (16 GB Ram, 500GB-1 TerraByte storage for under ... $50-80 bucks. They rarely overheat and just gooo...forever.

Can also look into some of the mini-computers @Sic and others have shared from amazon for about $200-300 and those probably run 30-40+ instances at a time...just depends what your budget is...

I like laptops so i can move em around and they come with a prebuilt screen so I dont always have to pony up for extra monitors or hub/docking stations.

Super easy to maintain and run...these IBM machines are little beasts...

If I was you. I would get a laptop with AMD 7 and nividia GTX 4050 or 4060 don't matter go with the one with best price ratio. Also buy the one with least amount of Ram but make sure it is upgradeable to 64 but for 40 account I would suggeste 128ram. It will cost you about 200 to 300 dollars to upgrade the ram yourself. Also make sure you can have ability to have 2 sockets for TB 1 memory. Run EQ on the one them. This should not cost u more than 1100 to 1400. If you would buy a laptop with 128ram they would chage u probably over 2000. Also I find that G skill ram are amazing if your going to upgrade urself.

I run 18-20 on this laptop with no issues:

Device name HP-Victus
Processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-13500H 2.60 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (29.7 GB usable)
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 6GB

Picked it up as an open box refurb for $800.

I can't speak much for EQ/MQ. I do currently have a Legion 5 Pro that has run 12 w/o issue. But as a long time "gaming laptop" fan... take cooling seriously and turn off all the graphical "boosts" they have. It isn't worth it. I used to put frozen bacon on my keyboard for WoW raids to stop graphical tearing.

The answer was the first reply though. Software settings, not more hardware.

Also a Lenovo fan when it comes to laptops.

I upgraded my old Legion to a new one back in March. Ryzen 7, 32gb, 2 1tb m.2 and rtx 4060.

Runs great even when compiling mq in the background granted i typically only run 6 due to the emu rules.
