Pirates of the Burning Sea is a pirate MMORPG that I was unfortunate enough to beta test a few months ago. After playing for a few weeks, I tore down my Pirates of the Carribean Poster, threw away my eye patch, and deleted my Geoffrey Rush wallpaper.

While perusing Massively.com, I glimpsed a header that piqued my interest: New PotBS devlog reveals chat bubbles. Reveals chat bubbles? What's there to reveal? Almost every up to date MMO has chat bubbles. This is big news? I clicked the included link and was forwarded to the Pirates developer's log.

Among the listed "improvements" are floating names. You mean that until patch 1.2, characters won't have names over their heads? Look, I can forgive that maybe in pre-production you neglected to include some standard MMO element, but this does not fall into that category.

Maybe, at some point, character jumping and swimming will be announced as a "bonus feature". Who am I kidding? You'll probably have to buy the expansion.

I understand (and don't care) about release dates and production schedules, but beta builds are feeling more and more like alphas, and finished games are feeling more and more like the bag that I carry home after I walk my dog.

I encourage you to read through this article in order to see all of the huge oversights marketed as generous improvements. The whole thing ends with some Flying Lab Software team leader giving himself a pat on the back by saying:

"As I reflect on all of these improvements, I’m struck by the massive amount of work we’ve done in such a short time."

Bravo sir.

Is anyone playing this game?

Well I too was in beta, for about as long as it took to uninstall the game.

Too slow, too mundane and too much a big pain in the ass to play, especially when you are trying to trade and the other players are totally screwing up the markets by either dumping large amounts of product at stupidly low prices or jacking up prices to stupid levels, in a weak attempt to price gouge. It gives me a new respect for the stock traders of this work, since now I know what would happen if the average warcraft-kiddie were in charge of the markets.

Anyway... from what I hear, this game was based on the Auto Assault engine... looks like it may be heading that way too. I give this game until the end of this year, anybody else want to contribute to the deadpool?

Yay... my smilie is back. :ripperjack:

It took me a year and a half to get into the Beta, and when I was accepted I couldn't wait to start playing it...

I uninstalled it 20 minutes after I first played it. It was horrible.

/me waits for Conan with everyone else...

the comment about the floating names above heads kind of hit a chord.

WoW was my first MMO (aw, it's CUTE!), and i couldn't for the life of me figure out why the opposing faction had big fucking red neon signs pointing out their location.

seems to me that a game that DIDN'T have that would be a bonus feature in my eyes. you'd actually be able to use terrain to hide and evade pursuit. jump in the bushes, and have it actually MEAN somehting.

if it would make the game too hard for finding guildies in a city, then make it that way only for the opposing faction.

big red letters = pretty ghey IMO

Iso, what time/day/year is it in your part of Japan right now?

Well Iso is in the same time zone as me, just in the northern hemisphere, while I'm in the south here in Queensland Australia. Which means I'm the only person he can play with during evening prime time. Lucky him. :ripperjack:

Warhammer is gonna be a huge disapointment, I've known Paul Barnett for a number of years. The guy is a complete tosser and his ideas are always half-baked/poorly implemented. I'd be very surprised if Warhammer fulfills its "potential"

I am with ISO on the floating names being gay. I've been used to them for a while since my first MMO was EQ and they abounded~ Really though it takes a lot of the game when you know everyone's name standing in a 50 mile radius of you without ever interacting with them. No matter how much of an advantage it provides when you see someone you hate walking your general direction and book ass before they get there.

Warhammer I think will have the same terrible combat as DAoC. Of course on the flip side AoC seems to be trying it's damnedest to have a shittier release than Vanguard. And that is assuming they fix a ton of shit in the next 2 months and 20 days. If not I think it might top AO or maybe even Shadowbane for release suckitude.
