Yeah, I know these posts are common. I've read through a few and been impressed with the community, though. I want to 2-3 box and MQ could definitely be useful. Ideally, the team would be sk, shm, and brd. The problem is I am the most unconfident person when it comes to anything computer-related. I was super proud of myself for being able to download/install the Brewall's map package. I want to MQ mainly for grinding xp and progression. Can someone offer recommendations on where I should start? What all would I need to download and install to get up and running? I looked into ISBoxer but it just wasn't very appealing to me. Currently on the free account level but open to upgrading.

Happy trails, fellow Norrathians.

Welcome! Take a peek at the following info! It takes some reading and watching, and has some things "to do", but we have handy videos, chat threads and discord if you get stuck.
Getting Started / Returning user

Welcome to RedGuides, fellow EQ multi-boxing enthusiast!

The best place to begin is our "New User Guide" video series, click this TV to watch:

This step-by-step series will teach absolute beginners how to control 6 characters at once while highlighting Nav, AutoLogin, and DanNet, which are fundamental plugins that will enhance every aspect of your game.

Returning users check out - MacroQuest Release Party: https://www.redguides.com/community/threads/macroquest-release-party.80628/ for information about changes from the legacy MQ2 to the new and awesome MQ

Welcome! Remember that MQ is against the DBG rulebook. Check out the post in my signature for helpful tips on reducing your risk while using MQ.

Also, lately it seems they are getting more aggressive when banning accounts using MQ. With that said, it's best to have the mind set that it's just a matter of time before your accounts get banned and you'll have to start all over again which will turn into a never ending revolving door situation. Tough pill to swallow, but swallow it you will.

Have fun!

Welcome to RG and welcome back if you're a returning player!

Always start here RG Video

Watch the vids Sic has created as they are your greatest source of information. I would even recommend watching them twice. Toon Movement - AutoGroup/AutoAccept/MQ2Yes - Basic Overview

Once you have an idea of how things work, you'll want to look into some automation options. Check out Kissassist Beginners Guide, Kissassist Commands , RGmercs, and especially cwtn plugins ( you can also /testcopy your toons and use the cwtn plugins there for free and you'll want to spend some time looking at CWTN Plugins Explained.). New as of Feb 2024, RG Mercs Lua Version

I suggest getting your feet wet slowly and be patient as it takes time to absorb all this information. Try taking your toons somewhere safe and lower level at first and explore the automation options. It takes some time to get used to, so don't be surprised it if feels overwhelming at first.

Once you feel like your're getting the hang of it (or to get a more in depth idea of what this site can do), then check out the plugins, macros, and lua's available to complement your automation. Things like Overseer Lua, buttonmaster, mq2autogroup, MQ2Autoaccept, MQ2Status, GuildClicky, Boxhud, MQ2Buffme, Magellan. You'll also want to see Lua event manager.

How do you get to see and experience all of this you ask? You need to be a level 2 member. To do that you have 2 options. First, you can subscribe (paid method) or second, you can use Red Cents. What the heck is a Red Cent you ask? Red Cents can you help with your subscription and it's the currency this site uses. Contribute helpful information (post here) and others will give you red cents and each red cent you give others returns one to you. check it out! Red Cents

Time to subscribe to level 2 and begin a journey you won't regret. Lots of info and a super helpful community here to help when you get stuck.

Welcome. All the good advice here I don't have a ton to contribute that's not covered. Only thing i'll say is spend some time in discord as well. It's the best place to learn and make good friends in this space. Often times its a quick way to get pointed to the right area of documentation to review.
Good luck, cheat smart, have fun!

You havent lived till you've cybered in EQ!

First of all, welcome!! Also, never apologize for asking any question around here, "stupid" or not. Most people here are more than happy to help anyone with anything. (hopefully we STAY with that philosophy @Sic ) If I had a dollar for every dumb question I have asked I would be a rich man!

With regard to getting started with MQ as a non-computer guy, I cannot recommend the CWTN plugins highly enough for pure entry level EASE OF USE. Literally just start it and select the mode and you are off to the races. As you get more comfortable you can dig in and tweek as you like but it literally works "out of the box" perfectly.

However, there is no CWTN Plugin for your Bard so if you absolutely must have the Bard you will have to dig in a bit deeper into understanding MQ. The Lua RGMercs is amazing with a very easy GUI but it does take a bit more understanding and tweeking than any of the CWTN plugins have.

If you have a Beaslord, Rogue, or Zerker on hand a great 3 Box team would be SK, SHM, with any one of those 3. The beauty there is that they all have CWTN Plugins so your whole crew would be set to rock and roll with ease and you can learn more while you are still having a great time playing full tilt 3 box.

It's easy to 3 box without 3rd party software.

It's even possible to 6 box and more without 3rd party software. I got myself up to 6 boxing.

I would recommend mastering up to 6 boxing without 3rd party software first.

It will give you a better understanding on they dynamics of multi-boxing, esp on things like creating social macros, and just generally juggling multiple toons at once.

I don't use MQ myself, but this is still the best website for learning how to multibox, regardless if you use 3rd party software or not.

I only learned about this website a few days ago. Apparently it's banned on ths everquest reddit, since it does talk about MQ.

Lol if I didn't live with someone who also liked this and have both of us to figure it out I would become best friends with ChatGPT. I would plug in the things people said and ask it to dumb it down for me or put what they said into step by step instructions. Then I would tell it that we are going to play ChatGPT Dungeons and Dragons, and it is going to be a lizardman warrior, where I would try to be the gm but it would get confused and take over narrating, again. Or you could just beg the super nice people here for help with your problems.

I just started my MQ journey from scratch a few weeks ago. I am level 90 now. I jumped in headfirst with a full six-box group including a bard. I wrote a much longer post, but then condensed it down to just the highlights. Happy to add more detail if it will help.
  1. Use a VPN. This was actually a lifesaver. I was extremely skeptical of this, but I went from constant disconnections, typically losing at least one character on every zone transition, to literally zero disconnects since turning on VPN. I would have probably quit without it.
  2. You will spend A LOT of time tweaking the automation. The automation needs to be at least 50% of the fun for you to really enjoy the experience.
  3. For that reason, I cannot recommend the CWTN plugins any more highly. Having your entire group on the same automation system makes it much easier, and these plugins just work.
  4. Do not start with a bard. Adding a bard will substantially increase the time you spend trying to setup and configure the automation. At level 90, I am happy to have the bard, but even still its the character that requires the most fiddling and has the most deaths to weird stuff. I would advise getting to 85 and then adding a heroic bard. If you really want the bard, and are ok with it being more complex, go with KissAssisst. There are a lot of good TLP focused INIs here that will make this much easier.
  5. Be prepared to die a lot. All kinds of things are going to go wrong. You're going to make a lot of mistakes learning to setup and move camps, move through zones, setting up pulls, etc. This is part of the process, be prepared for it, and have patience with it. Setting up a fellowship campfire in a smart location can save you a lot of time and pain when you do inevitably screw it up.
  6. Box groups are incredibly efficient and effective at combat, but their kryptonite is complex terrain. Don't be greedy with this. Choose your camps and farming areas wisely, avoid complex terrain, and it will go much more smoothly for you. I did not follow this advice, so I spent a lot of time fishing bodies out of lava, water, getting stuck on everything in the game, and creating the worlds largest trains.
  7. Don't be in a rush. This is good advice for EQ generally it seems, but particularly with a box group, they are so efficient that making a few extra pulls versus trying to take a short cut is the better move most of the time. Especially true when using invis to move around.
Above all else, START ON THE TEST SERVER. Create three new characters, use the free plugins test gives you access too, and get them up to level 20 or so. You will work out a lot of the early kinks in movement hotkeys and settings, and then when you go to the server you want to play on, you'll be able to hit the ground running.

MQ has really revitalized the game for me. On the whole it's been a lot of fun, and I highly recommend giving it a shot.

Seems like the base info was skipped over. That is you need to be Level 2 to enjoy some of this free. And someone donated your first level 2 to you to help you get started. So how do you get those Red Cents to keep up your level 2?

Right now you have 180 Red Cents. You can go to the Red Cents in the upper right, click it and in the shop you can "buy" or trade 50 Red Cents for a month free.

To earn more Red Cents you can click the big RED CENT in the lower right corner of a post you find helpful, funny or cool. That will earn you a couple each day. Better yet when you post something funny, helpful or cool then others will give you Red Cents and that is how you build them up to get free months. And that is how you got those 180 you have right now.

Welcome and enjoy!

First of all, mad respect to your boxing skills!

However, I am going to disagree a bit on "its easy" to 3 box without 3rd party software. At least for me! I may be exceptionally sucky (most likely) but I used to Duo Box a Monk and a Shammy back before I even knew what MQ was and it was HARD af! It took me a long time to get all the hotkeys and shortcuts set to be even reasonably effective in bad situations and still when things got super sporty it was very hard for me. Also worthy of note, this was before Mercs as well. I do recognize a crew with mercs would be easier.

But, I think "easy" might not apply to everyone. Especially not SIX boxing without MQ. Is it doable? Yes, absolutely, by skilled folks with alot of time on their hands. Is it "easy"? In my opinion, (as a sucky player), it isn't easy.

Using MQ literally changed the entire game for me. There is no way I would still be playing EQ after 20 years without MQ. I six box my own crew and do any group content I want without ever LFG. So for me, "cheating" with MQ is more than worth it.

For the OP, if you want to play without MQ just to learn more about the base game and playing each class, great. But, in my humble opinion, nothing beats boxing with MQ and the top of that chain is boxing with CWTN plugins leading the crew with your Tank.

Again, I am a sucky player, but there is just no way on earth I could box any of these complex missions with specific mechanics in different phases of the mission without MQ.
