Is this to replace the normal launcher? Sorry if it is a double question. I went through the overview tab and wasn’t sure.
Yes, it's a replacement for the RedGuides Launcher, and it should discover your existing directories upon setup.

We're trialing redfetch and RGManager and seeing which users prefer before making one default in early 2025.

this looks interesting. especially since i do have both a compile set and a main RG set but i link the Lua, resources, and config folders. This could be super handy.

Why fix something that ain’t broke ?

I spent the first 6 months of this year just untucking stuff that’d changed.

The cost of remediating “tech debt” is paid by users who are perfectly happy with the current situation.

I don’t like changing everything to change nothing and gain nothing.

the gains are pretty substantial frankly - and provides fairly substantial cost savings. Red Fetch is source-available for contributions/forks/etc.

it also means that instead of "yeah that's a known issue", that it can get eyeballs and be fixed without a whole bunch of jumping through hoops.

redfetch also means that folks who self-compile, like me, can utilize it to still download resources which while isn't the focus, is a pretty cool addition.

redfetch is performative over the current launcher - faster, fewer api calls, less likelihood of file smashing conflicts (outside of AV/File scanning).

redfetch solves a bunch of tech-debt + real-debt over the current and other options we have.

as someone who provides a lot of support for the current launcher, i've been excited about a replacement for a while - I'm not fully sold on how it *looks*, but how it functions is pretty great

I'll probably update the auth on the RedGuides Launcher so it'll keep working after the next forum upgrade.

I think Sic and I learned in 2019 that it's best to let people keep using their current setup, and let them move over gradually.

that was a pleasant install experience!

the tool is thoughtful, well laid out, i love how the theme changes depending on what version of mq you are trying to run. its faster than the launcher too. i also like how i can exclude a resource so my edits to KA don't get overwritten on update.

10/10, would redfetch again!

Hello,

i tried this new launcher and i am running into some problems:

When i start redfetch, it seems to not recognize my RG Launcher setup. It starts with a screen, where i have to enter "ready" first and then select a folder to install. I have all game related stuff on an other drive (im my setup its E:\). My RG Launcher ist installed on E:\, is there a way where i can point redfetch on setup to this directory?

Another point is, if i use option 3 on my setup and point to the the directory e:\redfetch then i see a few lines and then the terminal closes immediatly

I would like to switch to redfetch, becuase its easier to handle, but i dont want to setup everything from scratch, like toons, configs,...

Thanks for letting me know about the issue with custom config directories, go ahead and run it again as I just pushed a fix. I think users/public makes the most sense as that's what eq uses, but place it wherever you like.

After you set the redfetch config directory, it will glance around for your very vanilla, myseq, and everquest folders. It won't try very hard though, so you may have to manually set them.

You can enter any path you like for Very Vanilla, e:\, z:\, etc, but you'll have to type it out or paste it in on the "Settings" tab. (I need to write a directory picker that handles drive letters!)

Red - can a toggle setting be added for (using example, label it what you please if you do this) "Close Redfetch when MQ launcher opens" ... just asking because im lazy and stared at the screen for about three minutes till I realized haha

Thank you very much, that worked now like a charm! :)
One more question, is there a way to point to the RG Launcher Setup, and then to take over the settings, or do i need to do that all by hand? My RG Launcher Installation, is not on the default drive c:\

ah that's why it didn't find your RG launcher settings, redfetch only looks in c:\

C:\ProgramData\RedGuides\DesktopUtility\settings\settings.json

(the function is get_rg_utility_paths)

is the only difference your drive letter? I suppose I could have it look in all drives

I'll add it to the list :)

Thank you for the hint, i copied now the RedGuides Folder into the ProgramData Folder, and reinstalled redfetch. The installation found now my old RedGuides Folder :)
Great work, thank you

Finally got around to installing and testing this. This is cool. It updated quickly.

One thing I noticed is that no matter if I hit y or n on this it will always say that I don't have the latest version of redfetch.

I will state as a preface that I use windows scaling at 150% default on 27" 2560x1440 monitors. I largely do this for the readability of the EQ UI. This may be affecting things like button sizes/etc (I'm going to look into it, and if so, change the scaling if I'm able).

Some things I have noted:

* I think the easy update button takes up too much real estate, there is a lot of unused space with a centered button of that size. See preface note, however.

* I don't see a clear indication that an update is available for MQ without hitting the button (this may simply be because I have not yet encountered an available update while using Redfetch!)

* The settings tab is much improved over the old launcher, its streamlined and simple while having everything I need.

* The Special Resources feature (and especially the maps) is a wonderful idea. If it has not already been considered, I think EQLogParser would be a good candidate as a built-in special resource if it is possible/permissible (I understand that there is a way to manually add special resources myself).

* The shortcut tab is wonderful, I would love the ability to perhaps select some of the shortcuts to display on the fetch tab as a user customization. Maybe in some of that dead space near the easy button?

* The startup sequence/first install is absolutely adorable.

* I think that it may be nice to be able to de-select resources or exclude them from the easy update list while keeping them watched (as watches have use beyond updating in redfetch like notifications/etc.). This would also have the benefit of being an addon-wide protection, without needing to manually edit anything. For now, I have read the instructions on locking particular files, and to be honest, I'll just keep my manual edits read-only as I was previously doing.

Overall my impression is positive, I'll likely continue using it. Fwiw, I haven't tried RGManager yet (I intend to).
